On the morning of Jan 23, Huaqiao University (HQU) launched a themed event to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year. It brought together faculty, students, and alumni at the College of Fine Arts (Quanzhou campus) and Qiaoyuan Neighborhood Center (Xiamen campus), where they wrote Chunlian, or Spring Festival couplets to embrace the Year of the Loong with an intriguing blend of blessings and brush strokes.
Themed “Spring Festival Couplets: Auspicious Messages for You”, the event drew a diverse crowd of calligraphers. Teachers and alumni from the College of Fine Arts and the School of Law wielded their brushes to write in ink swiftly and skillfully and created excellent calligraphic works. Lively and vigorous strokes on the red paper not only carry the most sincere wishes, but also demonstrate the charm of traditional Chinese culture in an incisive and vivid way.
The room was full of cheers and laughter, with all the attendant excitement. Some of them were fascinated by the art of Chinese calligraphy, some were eager to have a try, and some said that they couldn’t wait to adorn their home with these auspicious messages of the couplets.
As one of the cultural activities organized by the College of Fine Arts, the beloved event has been held for many years. It offers students home and abroad an opportunity to learn more about the rich tapestry of Chinese cultural traditions, and adds to the festive atmosphere in the campus by attracting more people to share in the Spring Festival’s warmth and joy.
