Release time:2023-12-06      Author:

The International Communication Literacy Training Camp (the Overseas Social Media Operation Workshop) of Huaqiao University (HQU) concluded on December 2. The 22-day camp is hosted by the HQU Press Center, School of Journalism and Communication, and YoyWow Communications. YoyWow Communications is one of the earliest companies exporting Chinese cultural products, and was included on list of “National Key Cultural Export Enterprise” in 2021.

During the camp, some key people in the field from YoyWow Communications gave lectures in some courses such as “2023 Digital Analysis of Global Social Media”, “Fundamentals of Overseas Social Media Operation”, and “Case Study of Chinese Cultural Products Going Out”. They also provided guidance to the campers on planning and exporting Chinese cultural products in small groups within a limited time. Taking Langhua (a Xiamen TV show representing the story of Xiamen local) and Meet Song and Yuan Dynasties in Quanzhou as examples, the senior journalists of Xiamen Media Group and Quanzhou TV shared the skills related to topic selection, planning, and dissemination of short videos. The off-campus tutors for practice from the HQU School of Journalism and Communication taught the students the skills of video shooting and editing, helping the participants further enhance their international communication literacy by acquainting them with the current situation and trend of overseas social media, the fundamentals of short video operation and creation, and so on.

Along with the lectures, the specialists guided the students in creating short videos and operating personal social media accounts. During this period, the trainees submitted nearly 100 works and displayed them on domestic and overseas platforms. Among them, 21 works participated in the award selection of the camp.

At the closing ceremony, teachers and students gathered together to watch the award-winning works. Not only did the teachers provide valuable comments and suggestions on short video creation and social media operation, but the students also shared their thoughts, feelings, and gains from the camp.

According to the host, YoyWow Communications has created a YouTube channel to display the participants’ works. Moreover, outstanding works will be shared on other platforms of YoyWow Communications and the official website of HQU.

The camp has organized three workshops on short video and live-streaming skills, documentary and news photography, and overseas social media operations. Senior media professionals from Fujian Media Group, Xiamen Media Group, and Quanzhou TV have been invited to give lectures, and more than 950 students from 20 colleges across the university have been enrolled in the program, including over 320 international students from Malaysia, Thailand, Angola, and other countries, as well as students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. A total of 140 short videos and 220 photographs have been produced, and 60 students have been selected for internships in mainstream media such as China News Service, Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group, Fujian Daily, Fujian Media Group, and Xiamen Media Group. The overseas social media platforms operated by the students attract nearly 7,000 followers and about 60,000 likes.
