HQU Research Team Offering Innovative Solutions to Xiamen’s New Airport Construction

Release time:2023-12-01      Author:

According to the Strait Herald Agency (one of the mainstream media groups in Fujian Province), intelligent perception in the super-large area preloading for ground improvement has been initiated in China, which facilitate the massive land reclamation from the sea for Xiamen’s new airport (Xiang’an Intl. Airport). The technology, Space-Air-Ground Integrated Collaborative Monitoring System applied in this breakthrough, was developed by Professor Xiao Chaoyun’s team from the College of Civil Engineering, Huaqiao University (HQU).

Special Report from The Strait Herald Agency

Land reclamation for Xiamen’s new airport is challenging due to its extremely strict requirements for settlement after ground treatment and differential settlement. Aiming at some issues in multi-source perception, including ground settlement and deformation, ground water and soil pore pressure change, Professor Xiao’s team took advantages of various technological means including the Internet of Things, cloud computing, edge computing, deep learning applications in big data analytics, and pioneered a novel Sky-Air-Ground collaborative monitoring system.

This technology can be employed in multi-physical quantity perception in geological formations in massive area preloading for ground improvement, creating a multi-physical quantity perception matrix with elements of ground settlement, differential settlement, pore pressure, and water level in land reclamation projects.

It is worth mentioning that Professor Xiao’s team has also applied deep learning artificial intelligence prediction algorithms to dynamically predict post-construction settlement in real time, and predicted the unloading time in consideration of geological differences in the site, so as to provide robust support for accelerating steps for land handover.

The Strait Herald Agency reports that Xiamen’s new airport is underway with a Sky-Air-Ground real-time across all domains intelligent perception system for ground improvement in massive land reclamation. The system, featuring construction performance display, makes dynamic construction guidance for improving quality, raising efficiency, and careful quality management so as to build a more solid infrastructure base. The automatic monitoring technology worked impressively in massive land reclamation and ground improvement. With continuous innovation and upgrading, it is expected to be promoted and applied in related industries, leading to noticeable social benefits and economic returns.

Professor Xiao's team offered solid support to make sure airport project run as efficiently as possible through technological innovation and application practice. The team not only set a new benchmark for the new airport construction, but also gave fresh ideas and directions for future urban infrastructure.
