Shanghai Ranking released the 2023 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking (BCSR) on November 8. A total of 16 subjects of Huaqiao University (HQU) make the list, marking the first time HQU ranking among the top 100 universities nationwide in terms of the number of the listed subjects. Notably, the Business Administration ranked in the top 12%, and Marxist Theory and Mechanical Engineering enter the top 20% for the first time.

According to the ranking results, four subjects of HQU, including Business Administration, Marxist Theory, Applied Economics, and Mechanical Engineering rank in the top 20%, reaching an all-time high. Software Engineering and Architecture enter the top 30%. Six subjects, i.e. Philosophy, Mathematics, Chinese Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, Materials Science and Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Technology are in the top 40%. Additionally, four subjects, i.e. Political Science, Information and Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Public Management enter the top 50%. 10 out of the 16 listed subjects have achieved significant advancement in their rankings. This progress demonstrates the steady rise of the number of listed subjects in the national rankings of HQU, entering the national top 100 for the first time.

Shanghai Ranking’s BCSR includes 96 first-level disciplines, covering tens of thousands of subjects across nearly 500 universities. The ranking subject is released from the top 50% universities. A total of 485 universities and 5,053 subjects are on the list in 2023. BCSR uses an indicator system that can be divided into five categories, including talent training, scientific research projects, awards and achievements, academic papers, and academic talents, with 17 dimensions involving over 50 objective quantitative indicators reflecting the competitiveness of subjects, and more than 100 observational variables. The ranking data are collected from third-party sources, including the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), as well as international and domestic literature databases.
