Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has recently announced the presentation of Eric E. Sumner Award to Professor En-hui Yang, an alumnus of class of 1986 from the School of Mathematical Sciences of Huaqiao University (HQU), for his contributions to the field of Video Coding.

En-hui Yang is a world-renowned expert in the fields of Multimedia Compression, Information Theory and Digital Communications, and the Canadian chief scientist in Information Theory and Multimedia Compression as well. He is also the co-developer of the Yang-Kieffer algorithm, a tenured professor of University of Waterloo, a member of IEEE and the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as well as a fellow of the RSC Academy of Science.

While continuously making breakthroughs in scientific research, Professor En-hui Yang has always been grateful to his alma mater -- HQU. He is the member of the 7th and 8th board of directors of HQU and has actively offered advice and suggestions to the development of the university. As a visiting professor of HQU, he often returns to give lectures and has donated money to establish scholarship funds, making great contributions to HQU’s talent training.

IEEE, an international institute of engineers in electronics and information science, is currently the world's largest and a very influential non-profit technical professional organization. IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award, one of the most prestigious honours of IEEE, was established in 1995 in memory of Mr. Eric Sumner, the President of the organization in 1991. The award is annually given to an individual or a team of no more than three for their outstanding contributions to the communications technology.
