HQU Launches Chinese Classroom at Sea

Huaqiao University (HQU), in collaboration with Astro Ocean Cruise, recently launched a Chinese Training Program for Foreign Crew Members of International Cruise Ships aboard the Piano Land cruise ship.


The innovative mobile Chinese Classroom, an initiative of HQU National Language Service Export Base, will provide Chinese language training to 130 international cruise crew members from five countries: Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, Myanmar, and the Philippines, who work in seven departments including guest services and hotel management.


During the opening ceremony, representatives from both organizations signed a cooperation agreement for language services targeting international cruise crew members. They also committed to advance this partnership in the future.


To create the onboard Chinese Classroom, HQU National Language Service Export Base has developed specialized Chinese language materials focused on common cruise Chinese and basic grammar. Additionally, they have created a Chinese Dictionary for the International Cruise Industry utilizing the Smart System of International Chinese Education. Instructor Liu Shanshan explained, “We use situational language teaching, diverse resources, and practical activities to help foreign crew members quickly learn Chinese in a relaxed environment, enhancing their ability to apply the language in real work situations.”


Indonesian crew member Panji Aryo Pangestu from the guest services department shared his enthusiasm, stating, “The instructional material and teaching are highly practical. I believe that through this training, I will be able to communicate better with my Chinese colleagues and provide a higher quality service for Chinese tourists.”


Since 2023, HQU National Language Service Export Base has partnered with the Xiamen Area of China (Fujian) Pilot Free Trade Zone administrative committee and the Xiamen Maritime Safety Administration to provide innovative Chinese language training for specific professional groups in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. The outbound language services is aimed at facilitating the international development of China’s cruise industry andadvancing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
