Two Chinese Ambassadors Praise HQU International Students

Recently, the cross-cultural communication achievements of Huaqiao University’s (HQU’s) international students have garnered the attention and endorsement of Chinese ambassadors. Cambodian student Kong Zhiyong (Chinese name) and Indonesian student Zhang Rui’er (Chinese name), both from School of Journalism and Communication, have attracted widespread attention from both home and abroad with their short video and documentary, in which they tell stories of cultural integration and display the spirit of youth along the Belt and Road.


Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong commends Zhang Rui’er, hoping she would continue to tell the stories of overseas Chinese on the Silk Road.


On December 9th, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong and the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia shared on their international social media platforms a micro-documentary co-created by Zhang Rui’er, a third-year Indonesian student majoring in Advertising. She recorded the story of her friend Guan Kaiwei, a Chinese-speaking tour guide in Bali who is struggling hard for a better life. Ambassador Wang expressed that the story reflects the cultural interaction between China and Indonesia, and he hoped they would continue to tell “Stories of Overseas Chinese on the Silk Road”, bringing new vitality to people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

The documentary series “The Sea Mirrors the Rising Moon” are planned and filmed by School of Journalism and Communication, HQU in collaboration with Xiamen Satellite TV. The vlogs feature the cultural experiences and journeys of international students along the Belt and Road countries, vividly showcasing the struggles and dreams of overseas Chinese on the Maritime Silk Road.


Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin commends Kong Zhiyong, hoping he would become a bridge for people-to-people connectivity between China and Cambodia.


On December 12th, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin posted on his international social media platform introducing “Cultural Bridge”, a short video created by Kong Zhiyong, a second-year Cambodian student majoring in Radio and Television, and his team from School of Journalism and Communication, HQU. Ambassador Wang congratulated Kong Zhiyong and his peers on winning the first prize of the “Understanding Contemporary China” short video national contest for international students, and expressed his hope for more bridges of cultural friendship to connect the peoples of China and Cambodia.

Kong’s short video showcases how the three cultural bridges of academia, sports illuminate the vibrant intersection of Chinese and foreign cultures on HQU campus. The three students depict their perception of a colorful China in their unique way, demonstrating their understanding and affection for Chinese culture.


The head of School of Journalism and Communication said that both Kong’s and Zhang’s works are already an important bridge for the exchange and mutual learning of Chinese and foreign civilizations and for the spread of Chinese culture to the world. The likes from the two ambassadors are a recognition not only of the two young students’ cross-cultural communication achievements but also of the efforts of the School of Journalism and Communication in training students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, overseas Chinese, and international students, as well as in international communication education. In the future, the school will continue to foster students with international perspectives and cultural communication capabilities, stay committed to spreading Chinese culture, serve national strategies, and promote cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries.
