On December 7, 2024, the national finals of the "Understanding Contemporary China" Chinese Short Video Contest for International Students concluded in Beijing. A total of 572 international students from 76 countries participated, submitting 289 short video entries, with 60 advancing to the finals. The gold medal was awarded to "Cultural Bridge," produced by Cambodian student Kong Zhiyong and Malaysian students Zhuo Songyuan and Huang Yukang from the School of Journalism and Communication at Huaqiao University(HQU). This entry was the only award-winning submission from a university in Fujian Province.
"Cultural Bridge" showcases how the three cultural pillars of "Academics, Sports, and Arts" illuminate the vibrant intersection of Chinese and foreign cultures on the campus of HQU. Kong Zhiyong fosters friendships between China and Cambodia through his active participation in campus clubs. Basketball enthusiast Huang Yukang transcends cultural boundaries by engaging with classmates from various nations on the court. Meanwhile, Zhuo Songyuan embraces artistic expression and stage performance, serving as a vibrant ambassador for cultural exchange between China and Malaysia. Together, they illustrate their own perceptions of China, reflecting the deep appreciation and genuine love that international students have for Chinese culture.
Kong Zhiyong, the representative of the award-winning team and a broadcasting and television major, stated, "The most valuable aspect of this experience was the growth I achieved—building deep friendships with my team and teachers, gaining insights into Chinese culture, and honing my skills in oral expression, public speaking, and video production. This journey has shown me that the pursuit of excellence is the greatest treasure."
A representative from the School of Journalism and Communication noted that in 2024, HQU established a "Student Oral Expression and Public Communication Practice Workshop" to enhance students' narrative skills in oral communication and public speaking. "Cultural Bridge" is one of the key outcomes of this initiative.
During the creation of "Cultural Bridge", the workshop assembled a guidance team with professionals from various departments, including the School of Journalism and Communication, Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, Publicity Department, Department of Student Affairs, and College of Foreign Languages. They provided comprehensive support throughout the entire process from topic selection and video production to presentation and bilingual expression.
Founded in 2002, this contest aims to help international students understand contemporary China by integrating their cultural backgrounds and experiences. It seeks to deepen their awareness of China's reforms, development achievements, and the underlying logic of its progress. The event is co-hosted by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Beijing Language and Culture University.
