Recently, the research team led by Dr. Zhang Jiangchi and Prof. Xie Chaowu from the College of Tourism at Huaqiao University (HQU) published a paper online titled “The effect of resilient leadership on employee resilience during a crisis in tourism & hospitality firms: A self-determination perspective” in International Journal of Hospitality Management.
The team surveyed 67 tourism and hospitality firms which yielded 2422 valid responses. They reveal the mechanism of resilient leadership impacts employee resilience during crises from self-determination theory. Despite their susceptibility and vulnerability to crises and risks, tourism and hospitality (T&H) firms can withstand negative threats through effective adaptation and sustained resilience. Resilient leadership emphasizes adaptable diversity and dynamic recovery. The cultivation of this new type of leadership and maximizing its effectiveness have become a crucial task for T&H firms to deal with risks, adapt to threats, and achieve sustainable development. Therefore, based on the life cycle model of resilience leadership and self-determination theory, the study identifies the psychological mediation mechanism of resilient leadership impacts employee resilience during crises and elucidates environmental dynamism’s role in substituting resilient leadership’s effectiveness. It enriches the research scope and theoretical framework of resilience leadership, providing theoretical guidance for T&H firms to develop resilience-oriented leadership strategies.
