On the evening of May 18, the Xiamen campus of Huaqiao University (HQU) was pulsating with rhythmic energy of the 24 Festive Drums. Drummers from both Quanzhou and Xiamen Campuses, along with the Malaysian student drummers and the alumni drummers delivered the 18th campus live performance, offering the audience a visual and acoustic feast.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. Themed “Harmony”, the performance has three parts: Genesis of Beats, Echoes of Growth, and Harmonious Flourish. The enchanted interplay of drum rhythms and melodic currents brings to life the timeless friendship between China and Malaysia, evoking deep cultural resonance.
The show opened with “Source” performed by the freshmen from Quanzhou campus, setting the tone for the first segment: Genesis of Beats. The clear and thunderous drumbeats and the synchronized movements, drew the audience into a captivating world, weaving a narrative about the friendship of the two countries and the growth of the HQU 24 Festive drum team.
“Prosperity” and “Memory” presented by drummers from Xiamen Campus and Malaysia, painted a picture of life in full bloom with their vibrant, energetic rhythms, pulling audience into a journey through time. HQU alumni Tee Chiew Sheng led his drum team Northern Drum to participate in the show with “First Steps”, a program integrated with HQU motto.
“Yin Yang Fish” was a unique, dynamic performance that brought the ancient concept of Yin and Yangto life through the art of drumming and dance.
“A Long Farewell” portrayed the nostalgia of students as they part with their beloved drum team and college life.
The resonance of the drumbeats lingered, alongside the enduring friendship. The performance concluded with “Perseverance”, celebrated by all the drummers, reflecting the united spirit and friendship of the two nations.
Lin Siying, a freshman from the College of Civil Engineering, took part in the public performance for the very first time. “The moment I applied for the performance, I believed I would definitely be on stage.” she said. “At the end of the program, as the audience applauded thunderously, I truly felt the charm of this stage.”
Since its establishment 27 years ago, the HQU 24 Festive Drums Teamhas been committed to carrying on fine traditional Chinese culture through drum performances. They stage a campus performance every early summer, with all the drummers training intensely together. Even alumni members come back from around the world to be part of the grand event once again.
