HQU Students Home and Abroad Celebrate Chinese New Year Together

To further enrich students’ cultural life in a lively festive atmosphere, the Students’ Affairs Office organized colleges and student organizations to carry out various cultural activities during the winter holidays. Domestic and overseas students celebrated the Chinese New Year via online and offline activities.



On the occasion of Chinese New Year, HQU students from all over the world were celebrating the festival by presenting Chinese traditions and cultures. “Flying Tiger”, the social practice group of the HQU Hong Kong students held a paper-cutting activity on January 18th in Heung To College of Professional Studies, whose students said that participating in the activity allow them to have better understanding about China’s intangible cultural heritage andthe charm of traditional Chinese traditional handicrafts.



In addition, Students of HQU Tan Kah Kee School and the winners of Chinese government scholarship and “Belt and Road scholarship” supported by Tanoto Foundation jointly participated in the photography competition to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Business School organized overseas students to participate in the volunteer service activities of writing and handing out Spring Festival couplets to the communities around HQU. The Chinese Language and Culture College organized overseas students who stay on campus during the winter holidays to share and convey the joy of the Chinese New Year by shooting photos of the festive atmosphere in the neighborhood, shared and spread the traditional Chinese culture to the world.



The Students’ Affairs Office and colleges also held a series of activities like stove-boiled tea(newest way to chillax in China), Spring Festival tea party and dorm visiting with New Year gifts for the students who stay on campus, chatting and writing Spring Festival couplets together, asking them to make plans for their winter holiday life, be physically active and stay safe on campus.


To encourage students on and off the campus to explore the traditional Chinese cultures around them through personal experience, survey and other ways during winter holidays, the College of Tourism held the class for Spring Festival couplets writing. The School of Journalism and Communication held the traditional Chinese culture-themed photography exhibition. The Chinese Language and Culture College held cloud class for Chinese culture experience, and the College of Mechanical Engineering and Automation released theWeChat Red Packet Cover Exclusivefor the Year of the Rabbit. HQU students organizations held various events including spring customs collection, New Year cuisine contest, excellent singing works showcase, online New Year singing relay, badminton competition, online Spring Festival gathering, which were quite popular among students.



On New Year’s Eve, nearly 100 HQU domestic and overseas students gathered at the Student Community Center of Xiamen and Quanzhou campuses to make dumplings, fry Fuguo (a traditional snack originated in Quangang District, Quanzhou, Fujian Province, is a must-have food for every festival, which is fried with sweet potato powder wrapped in lean meat, oyster, carrots, Korean vegetables and shredded pumpkin), steam rice puddings, guess lantern riddles, and make paper-cuts for windows. They were happily experiencing traditional Chinese customs, tasting authentic Chinese food, and celebrating the Chinese New Year together. 


More than 70 events held consecutively by the Students’ Affairs Office, colleges and student organizations during the Spring Festival, helping domestic and overseas students experience rich traditional Chinese culture.
