ShanghaiRanking recently released the 2022 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking (BCSR), with HQU’s 16 subjects on the list.

Huaqiao University’s Applied Economics and Business Administration remain in the top 20% of the rankings. Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Literature, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture rank in the top 30%. Marxist Theory, Chinese Language and Literature, Mathematics, Materials Science and Engineering, and Civil Engineering enter the top 40%. Law, Political science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Software Engineering are in the top 50%.

BCSR includes 96 first-level disciplines, covering tens of thousands of subjects in nearly 500 universities. The ranking of each subject targets universities with academic master’s degree programs in the first-level disciplines, and includes the top 50% of them. A total of 5,035 subjects from 484 universities are on the list in 2022.

BCSR uses an indicator system that can be divided into five categories, i.e., talent training, scientific research projects, achievement and awards, research papers, and academic talents, with 17 dimensions involving more than 50 objective quantitative indicators and more than 100 observational variables to measure the competitiveness of subjects. The rankings also collect third-party data from the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and international and domestic literature databases, to reflect a given subject’s claim and contribution to scarce resources and landmark achievements of the discipline.
