HQU Prof. Wei Zhanhua’s Team Makes New Breakthrough in PeLEDs

Professor Wei Zhanhua’s team from Institute of Luminescent Materials and Information Displays, College of Materials Science and Engineering at Huaqiao University (HQU) co-authored an onlineNaturepaper published on Nov. 25 with Professor Edward H. Sargent’s team from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto (UT). The paper is entitled “Distribution control enables efficient reduced-dimensional perovskite LEDs”. By passivating the perovskite quantum well (QW) surfaces and distributional control, the researchers have significantly improved the performance and lifespan of perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs), and enhanced the scope of possible applications in the fields including new display and lighting technologies.

Natureis one of the world’s most influential science journals publishing the finest peer-reviewed research in all fields of science and technology. The key findings by Professor Wei Zhanhua’s research team marked the second paper that HQU published inNatureas the corresponding affiliation since its first one in 2018. This an encouraging result for the university in advancing new frontiers of materials science.

Professor Wei Zhanhua said that the performance and lifespan of PeLEDs have been improved markedly over the last several years, but there is still a long way to go. He also hoped that in the future, more scientists would make concerted efforts to improve the steady-state output performance of devices, repeatability of high efficiency devices and multi-spectral output performance.


The first author of this paper Dr. Ma Dongxin is a postdoc of the University of Toronto and a visiting scholar of HQU. Dr. Lin Kebin of HQU is the second author and also makes great contributions to the project. Professor Edward H. Sargent and Professor Wei Zhanhua are corresponding authors. The research is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Fujian Province and the Science Research Funds of HQU.
