HQU Holds 8th Cross-Straits Youth Zhu Xi Culture Experience Camp

The 8th Cross-Straits Youth Zhu Xi Culture Experience Camp, organized by Huaqiao University (HQU), was held in Wufu, Wuyishan City from Oct. 20 to 31. Twenty-six students from Taiwan and thirteen teachers and students from Chinese mainland participated in the event,tracing the footsteps of Zhu Xi (a renowned Chinese philosopher of the 12th century) and discovering Zhu Xi culture.


In front of a Zhu Xi statue in Wufu, the campers practiced China’s ancient ritual for respecting teachers and valuing education, and recitedThe Family Instructions of Zhu Xiwith expression. Visiting Xingxian Academy, they marveled at the profound cultural foundation of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism when they learned that a four-character word “Zhu Si Xin Yuan” (洙泗心源, meaning Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism derived from Confucianism) was the key factor for Wuyi Mountain getting added to UNESCO World Heritage List. In Wuyi Academy, they were inspired by Zhu Xi’s life story and his outstanding achievements. The campers then visited the Xiangjiang Tea Industry Corporation to experience the traditional processing of Wuyi rock tea, such as picking, withering, laying leaves including setting and tossing, and stirring fixation. They immersed themselves in Chinese tea culture with various activities.


In wrap-up session, the participants shared their thoughts and perceptions of the three days’ study through group presentations or sketches.


The camp is hosted by Fujian Education System Care for the Next Generation Work Committee and co-organized by the School Affairs Committee of Fujian Education System Care for the Next Generation Work Committee and HQU Students’ Affairs Division, marking the 5th time that HQU has held the event. The program enhanced the cross-Straits youth exchanges, provided them with an opportunity to experience Chinese culture first-hand, and fostered greater patriotism and a stronger sense of national identity among youngsters on both sides of the Straits..
