On September 5^th, Huaqiao University (HQU) held its 2021 opening ceremonies for freshmen outdoors on Quanzhou and Xiamen campuses. More than 900 newly-enrolled overseas students were unable to attend the ceremonies in person according to the requirements of the epidemic prevention and control. But they managed to watch them with their families and friends through live broadcast on Weibo and WeChat Channels.

University leaders Xu Xipeng, Wu Jianping, Liu Gong, Liu Bin, Zeng Lu, Peng Pei, Bi Mingqiang, Wang Xiuyong, Wang Lixia and president assistant Zhang Yunbo attended the ceremonies. Wang Xiuyong, Vice-President of HQU, presided over the ceremony. The deans or party secretaries from each college and school, as well as directors of relevant functional departments attended the ceremonies. Exemplary student affairs counselors, security captains, medical staff, school canteen managers, and dormitory supervisors were invited to take a seat at the rostrum as representatives of the staff.

Wu Jianping, President of HQU, on behalf of the university and Xu Xipeng, the Party Secretary, extended a warm welcome to all the freshmen. He then addressed the opening ceremony under the title “Start with a goal, Progress with a will”.

Professor Gao Zhenguo, Distinguished Professor of Fujian Minjiang Scholars Program,from the College of Computer Science and Technology, and Professor Ke Rongqin, candidate for National Talent Program, from the School of Medicine/School of Biomedical Sciences, made speeches as faculty representatives. Chen Feizhou, Chairman of Quanzhou Huiji Technology Co., Ltd., from the College of Computer Science and Technology Class of 1998 spoke on behalf of the alumni. Lai Wangkun, a graduate student from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology and veteran of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Ground Force, and Sun Zhengyao, a Hong Kong undergraduate from Business School, welcomed the in-coming freshmen on behalf of the senior students. Chen Xinwei from the School of Architecture and Wang Jinghan from the School of Economics and Finance gave speeches in the name of the new students.

At the opening ceremonies, the university announced outstanding students in the 2020-2021 academic year, and the university leaders presented the 2021 HQU President’s Special Award to the winners.

In addition, HQU military training for freshmen from China’s mainland freshmen and “Chengzhi” training camp for those from overseas will be opened simultaneously on September 8 on both campuses.
