On August 2^nd, Chen Long of China, an alumnus of Huaqiao University (HQU), won the Tokyo Olympics badminton men’s singles silver medal. This was his third Olympics. He is the third shuttler after Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei who reached the semifinals of men's singles badminton in three consecutive Olympic Games, and captured one gold, one silver and one bronze.

As one of HQU’s undergraduate Class of 2011 in public affairs management and postgraduate Class of 2015 in public administration. He returned to HQU several times to exchange with the teachers, students and alumni. In September 2016, after claiming the gold medal in the Rio Olympics, Chen Long received the first HQU Presidential Special Award at HQU and interacted with the teachers and students at meet-and-greet event. In November 2020, the year marking the 60^thanniversary of HQU, Chen Long and Li Xuerui were invited to attend at the HQU event of Meeting Olympic Champion Alumni, sharing their Olympic experience, communicating with HQU’s teachers, students and alumni, and expressed their best wishes for the 60^thanniversary of HQU.

HQU boasts the only badminton team in Fujian province that has been recognized as a high-level sports team by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China (PRC). This team, in cooperation with the PLA (the Chinese People’s Liberation Army) Badminton Team and then Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Sports, has produced four Olympic champions including Lin Dan, Chen Long, Li Xuerui and Huang Dongping, and some famous badminton athletes such as Wang Xin, Jiang Yanjiao and Hong Wei.
