New UNESCO World Heritage Site Quanzhou Gets a Helping Hand from HQU

“Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China” was accepted as a cultural property on UNESCO World Heritage List at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee. This is also the only proposed item from China during this year’s session.

City of Quanzhou is added to the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee.

From “Quanzhou: the East End of Maritime Silk Road” in 2001, to “Historic Monuments and Sites of Ancient Quanzhou (Zayton)” in 2017, and to “Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China” in 2021, it takes 20 years for Quanzhou to become a World Heritage site. This bumpy journey embodies the efforts of many people, including those of Huaqiao University (HQU) teachers and students.

For a long time, Huaqiao University, with deep affection for the ancient city, has actively played its advantages by shouldering responsibility for the protection, research, inheritance and dissemination of cultural heritage. The university has also directly participated in and contributed to Quanzhou’s application for World Heritage Site.

1. Talent Intelligence: HQU is directly involved in the application for World Heritage Site

Applying for the World Heritage status is never an easy project, which requires extensive support from technical teams. Huaqiao University gives full play to its talent advantages in architecture and tourism. In cooperation with the city’s world heritage application team, they are directly engaged in the application work, including charting and drawing, compilation of verification reports, and heritage protection and environmental restoration.

2. Discipline Advantages: HQU carries out research on the protection of Quanzhou’s cultural heritage

Over the years, Huaqiao University has made full use of its discipline characteristics and advantages in architecture, tourism, fine arts, law, music and dance, journalism & communication, etc. A series of studies have been carried out on the preservation, inheritance and dissemination of Quanzhou’s cultural heritage. This serves as a theoretical basis and practical reference for heritage protection and cultural inheritance and innovation in Quanzhou.

3. Culture Dissemination: HQU acts as a bridge to spread the culture of the ancient city

The rich cultural heritage of the ancient city has been nourishing Huaqiao University. Nurtured by the culture, HQUers are the recipients of Quanzhou’s cultural heritage. They are also its disseminators, spreading the culture to guests from all over the world.

In retrospect, the application process was tough process yet significant. Quanzhou was once the window to the world where merchants gathered and cultures met. It is during this interaction that the root and soul of Quanzhou formed. Today, HQUers will, in joint efforts with others, spread the culture and retain the memory for Quanzhou to keep its root, protect its soul, and make the thousand-year-old city even more dazzling.
