On the morning of April 10th, a group of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese students from the School of Architecture of Huaqiao University (HQU), led by two teachers, carried out a voluntary practice in Longzhouchi and Dashe of Jimei School Village. Their purpose is to popularize the knowledge of famous historical and cultural cities, enhance public awareness of the protection and inheritance of historical and cultural heritage, and help Xiamen to be ranked as a state-list famous historical and cultural city and serve local development. The students separated into several smaller groups to distribute well-designed leaflets “Knowledge of Historical and Cultural Cities” to tourists and residents. They also interviewed and exchanged views on various dimensions with these tourists and residents in order to understand their needs in real life. Meanwhile, the practice group conducted in-depth research and geological mapping in some poorly planned areas.
After this trip, many students said that it was a combination of professional knowledge and social practice. As a specific practice of HQU's 100 Villages Tour, the School of Architecture activity will continue with the promoting and popularizing of the knowledge of famous historical and culture cities. Follow-up activities will include further in-depth research and micro-renovation, on the basis of needs of different groups, to improve the ecological environment and community landscape of Jimei School Village. HQU also hopes these practices can help Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese students to raise the awareness of preservation and inheritance of traditional Chinese culture.
