Huaqiao University Hosts Graduation Ceremonies 2020

On the evenings of June 20^th and 21^st, Huaqiao University (HQU) held its 2020 graduation tassel ceremonies on the athletic stadium of both Quanzhou Xiamen campuses. From home and abroad, over 7,000 graduates, online or present, attended the ceremonies.

Affected by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, 2,780 graduates from home and abroad were unable to attend the ceremony on the spot. With the help of live broadcast, HQU enabled these graduates and their families to witness and engage in this significant moment of their lives. Sina Weibo live broadcast viewers of the two ceremonies reached 101,000 and the number of participants in Sina News Client live broadcast rocketed to 660,000.

University leaders, Guan Yifan, Xu Xipeng, Liu Gong, Liu Bin, Zeng Lu, Peng Pei, Bi Mingqiang, Wang Xiuyong and president assistant Zhang Yunbo attended the ceremonies. Vice President Liu Gong presided over the ceremonies and Vice President Zeng Lu served as the Guest of Honor for the academic mace.

This year, 49 doctoral graduates, 1,372 postgraduates and 5,497 full-time undergraduates in HQU received doctoral, master's and bachelor’s degrees respectively. Among them, 295 Outstanding Graduate, 14 Outstanding Grassroots-serving Student and Outstanding Youth Volunteer awardees were commended by HQU.

Secretary of the CPC HQU Committee, Guan Yifan spoke highly of all the graduates and urged them to follow the models of their alumni and predecessors so as to exert youthful brilliance in chasing dreams, to fulfill youthful strength in shouldering responsibility, to demonstrate youthful value in coping with setbacks, and to speak for HQU with great strengths.

Xu Xipeng, President of HQU, delivered his speech titled Independence, Persistence and Innovation. He encouraged the graduates to maintain independent thinking and pursuit of dreams, to be self-reliant and to grow and transform in continuous exploration and practice after stepping into society. He mentioned that the graduates should bravely confront setbacks and challenges, and persevere to the end. He also hoped that the graduates would be curious, to learn, to update thinking, and to keep the vitality of innovation and change when faced with social changes.

Later on, under the guidance of President Xu Xipeng, all the present graduates turned the tassels for themselves, signifying their new journey after university.

On the ceremonies, Li Jiayan, the alumni representative from Business School's Class of 2010, encouraged the graduates by sharing her studying and working experience through online connection.

Doctor Lin Shenghui from School of Medicine/School of Biomedical Science and Associate Professor Ou Dayi from School of Architecture also gave speeches on behalf of teachers.

Wu Jieru, a student from School of Tourism’s Class of 2020 and Zhang Yiwei, a student from School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation’s Class of 2023, expressed their congratulations and wishes to the graduates as the undergraduate representatives.

Graduate representatives from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Brazil and other countries, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan shared their graduation feelings and expressed their gratitude toward HQU through live broadcast.

In 2014, HQU and the Eduardo dos Santos Foundation (FESA) co-hosted the first "Youth Science and Technology Talent Class of Angolan Government" which adopted the "2+4" mode to cultivate talents, and the first class is graduating this year. Mr. Ismael Diogo da Silva, President of FESA, sent a video to congratulate the students on their graduation and expressed his gratitude to HQU for the cultivation of Angolan students.
