​2019 in Review: Top 10 News of HQU

As 2019 wraps up, Huaqiao University Newspaper and Huaqiao University News have unveiled the Top 10 News of Huaqiao University (HQU) in 2019. Here is a recap of them in chronological order.

 

1. HQU Launches Year of Education on National Situation for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Students

More than 120 overseas Chinese students from countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil and Mongolia and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan joined the Winter Camp of 2019 "China Culture Tour" in late January, starting the Year of Education on National Situation for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Students in HQU. They are to learn about Chinese history, investigate the current national situation, receive national defense education and join National Day celebrations.

 

2. HQU Holds Activities to Commemorate Centenary of May Fourth Movement

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, addressed a gathering marking the centenary of the May Fourth Movement at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on April 30th. Party organizations at all levels, Party members and cadres, faculty, staff and students of HQU listened to or watched the gathering and heatedly exchanged their views on Xi’s remarks. Other commemorative activities at the university included a commemorative forum, national flag-raising ceremony, flash mob performance, public benefit relay, and technology-based artworks.

 

3. HQU Formulates Special Action Plan to Implement the Spirit of Xi’s Speech

In May, HQU released the Special Action Plan on In-depth Study and Application of the Important Speech Delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping at Jinan University, aiming at carrying out Xi's instructions at all administrative levels and teaching aspects, and promoting the construction of an elite university that features serving overseas Chinese. The Action Plan includes the following 6 aspects: adhering to the path of socialism under the overall leadership the CPC, keeping in mind the original mission of educating students morally and intellectually, highlighting the university feature and signature of serving overseas Chinese, sticking to reform and innovation to seek quality development, strengthening cultural roots and spreading traditional Chinese culture worldwide, and giving full play to its advantages to make more contribution to the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and New Fujian.     

 

4. UFWD, MOE and Fujian Government to Co-construct HQU

On August 19th, the United Front Work Department (UFWD) of CPC Central Committee, Ministry of Education (MOE) and Fujian Provincial People's Government released the Opinions on Jointly Constructing Huaqiao University. With that, HQU has been included in the overall plan of the UFWD of CPC Central Committee, which will, in collaboration with the MOE and Fujian Government, provide financial, policy and planning support to help the university to build itself into a high-level university, by giving full play to its feature, advantages, and also signature, of serving overseas Chinese.

 

5. HQU Launches Thematic Education Campaign

On September 12th, HQU held a mobilization meeting on the education campaign themed "staying true to our founding mission". Guan Yifan, Secretary of the HQU CPC Committee, called for a stringent and effective implementation of the thematic education campaign through study, investigation, reflection and rectification. Tang Cuiying, leader of the instructing group dispatched to HQU by the UFWD of CPC Central Committee in the second stage of the campaign, attended the meeting and gave instructions. Thus the education campaign was unveiled in HQU.

 

6. 27 HQUers Receive Commemorative Medals for the 70th Anniversary of PRC Founding

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Upon such occasion, HQU President Xu Xipeng, Prof. Huang Hui of the Institute of Manufacturing Engineering, Prof. Guo Zixiong of the College of Civil Engineering, and 24 retired cadres who participated in the work on the revolution before the founding of the PRC received commemorative medals issued for the event. HQU Honorary Professor & Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn received China's Medal of Friendship and attended the grand gathering held to celebrate the anniversary. Over 30 HQU members of Board of Directors, alumni, teachers and students watched the military parade for the National Day celebrations at invitation. Young HQU alumna Xu Mengting took part in the parade.

 

7. HQU Initiates One-Year Countdown of Its 60th Anniversary

November 1st marked the 59th anniversary of the founding of HQU. The same day, the university started the one-year countdown to its 60th anniversary and released the 60th Anniversary Announcement No.1, anniversary logo and website.

 

8. Paper by Wei’s Team Selected as the Most Influential 100 Papers of China 2018

The Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) released the Most Influential 100 Papers of 2018 on November. On the list was the paper by Prof. Wei Zhanhua of the College of Materials Science & Engineering of HQU as the first corresponding author, and HQU PhD student Lin Kebin the first author. The paper, entitled "Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 20 Percent", was published in the world’s leading science journal Nature.

 

9. HQU Leadership Restructured

On November 22nd, HQU held a caucus to announce that Wang Xiuyong and Wang Lixia were both appointed as Vice Presidents of HQU and Standing Committee Members of the HQU CPC Committee. Xu Yousheng, Vice Minister of the UFWD of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, attended the meeting. He emphasized that the personnel changes were made by the UFWD of CPC Central Committee after much thought and careful consideration of the needs of HQU's development and the construction of its leadership, aiming at optimizing the leadership structure and boosting its performance.

 

10. HQU 8th Board of Directors Commences the 1st Meeting

The 1st meeting of the 8th Board of Directors of HQU was held at Quanzhou on December 14th. Cai Dafeng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), Chairman of the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD) and of the 8th Board of Directors, Xu Yousheng, Vice Minister of the UFWD of CPC Central Committee and Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and Xing Shanping, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee and Head of the UFWD of the CPC Fujian Province, attended and addressed the meeting. Also present were Kang Tao, Secretary of the CPC Quanzhou Municipal Committee, and Guan Yifan, Secretary of the HQU CPC Committee. HQU President Xu Xipeng delivered a report on the work of the university, and Lee Pik-Tsong, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, reported on the work of the Board. The current Board of Directors consists of 103 directors. Prior to the meeting, Chairman Cai Dafeng took a tour of inspection of HQU. He pointed out that HQU, with its unique background and lofty mission, should shoulder the responsibility of serving overseas Chinese and promoting Chinese culture, which is also a long-term task for the university and an inescapable duty for him, the new HQUer.
