President Xu Xipeng Leads a Delegation to Malaysia and Vietnam

From September 18 to 25, Xu Xipeng, President of Huaqiao University (HQU) accompanied by leaders of the Graduate School, Department of Chinese Language and Culture Education, and Chinese Language and Culture College visited Malaysia and Vietnam.

 

The delegation visited the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, called on well-known local universities, Chinese language and culture education institutes and schools, signed international cooperation agreements on running schools, and visited some board directors and alumni. This visit was to enrich the levels, forms, contents and channels of Chinese language and culture education in HQU, promote the international cooperation in running schools, better fulfill HQU's mission of "serving the overseas Chinese and spreading Chinese culture", serve the personnel training for "the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)" construction, and accelerate the construction of an elite university with overseas Chinese education and studies.

 

At the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia, Bai Tian, Chinese ambassador to Malaysia met Xu Xipeng and his entourage. The two sides exchanged views on cooperation between HQU and Malaysia in recent years, namely the training of Chinese language teachers, "Chinese language and culture education plus", Malaysian studies, and Malaysian Chinese children studying in HQU.

At Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR), Xu Xipeng and Ewe Hong Tat, President of UTAR held discussions on the cooperation between the two universities in the fields of joint training of postgraduates, mutual recognition of course credits, student exchanges, online curriculum construction, scientific research, and student social practice. They reached several consensuses and renewed the memorandum of understanding.

The delegation also paid a visit to Tan Kok Wai, Malaysian Prime Minister's special envoy to the People's Republic of China and the Chairman of Malaysia-China Business Council, signing a cooperation agreement on the "Silk Road" Chinese Government Scholarships program to deepen the education cooperation mechanism under the BRI and to cultivate young scientific and technological talents familiar with the languages and cultures of both countries for the construction of the BRI.

The opening ceremony of the HQU's first Malaysian "Chinese Association" postgraduate class and the Mid-Autumn Festival reunion of HQU's Malaysian alumni were held in the meantime.

 

During their visit to Malaysia, the delegation also visited HQU's board director Woo Swee Lian, the United Chinese School Committees' Association of Malaysia, the Association of Graduates from Universities and Colleges of China, Malaysia, and some Chinese education institutes and schools such as Kuen Cheng High School. They discussed the needs, forms and implementation plans of the programs to be carried out by HQU and Malaysian Chinese education sector, including the training of Chinese language teachers, online Chinese education, and the Malaysian Chinese children studying in HQU, listening to the opinions and suggestions of board directors, alumni and people from all walks of life on HQU’s enrollment promotion and project cooperation in Malaysia.

 

At the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Counselor Peng Shituan and Xu Xipeng exchanged views on strengthening the educational cooperation between HQU and Vietnam, discussing ways and means for HQU to play a greater role in the training of Chinese teachers for Vietnam, distance education and online curriculum construction, and student exchange and training under the current background of "Chinese fever and in large demand" in Vietnam.

 

The delegation visits Peng Shituan, Chinese Counselor in the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

 

Xu Xipeng and his entourage visited Duy Tan University, Phu Xuan University, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, and Hanoi Metropolitan University, discussing with the presidents and vice-presidents of these universities on the cooperation of joint training of Chinese undergraduates, sending outstanding Vietnamese undergraduates to HQU for postgraduate study and HQU postgraduates to Vietnam for internship and practice. HQU delegation signed a memorandum of understanding with Duy Tan University and signed a cooperation agreement on the “Silk and Road” Chinese Government Scholarships program with Hanoi Pedagogical University 2. The two sides will jointly apply for the Chinese Government Scholarships program to train excellent Chinese teachers.

During the visit to Vietnam, Xu Xipeng also called on HQU's alumni and had a talk about their career and their suggestions on HQU's personnel training and the enrollment promotion in Vietnam.
