On the afternoon of April 9th, the Annual Report on Overseas Chinese Study (2018) officially came out at Xiamen campus of Huaqiao University. Compiled by HQU and published by Social Sciences Academic Press (SSAP), it is the eighth consecutive year that HQU has published a blue book of overseas Chinese.

Present at the unveiling ceremony were HQU Vice President Liu Gong, Deputy Director of China Institute for Chinese Overseas Studies Zhang Xiuming, Vice President of China Foreign Affairs University Gao Fei, Professor of Xiamen University and Distinguished Professor of Jinan University Li Minghuan, editor-in-chief and HQU former president Jia Yimin, HQU former vice president Zhang Yudong and HQU part-time professor Zhuang Guotu.

The theme for the 2018 Report is Overseas Chinese and Cultural Exchanges, in particular, their identification and inheritance of Chinese culture, and the role they play in the international cultural exchanges. The 2018 Report is structured from four perspectives, i.e., Overseas Chinese and the Image of China, Overseas Chinese and Cultural Exchanges, Overseas Chinese and Their Survival and Development, and Overseas Chinese and Laws and Policies. The book mainly explores the perception of Chinese culture by overseas Chinese in the US and Southeast Asia, their role in cultural exchanges, their life experience overseas and the protection of their rights and interests. 

The launch ceremony of the Blue Book of Overseas Chinese (2011-2018) Collector's Edition was also held the same day. It is the showcase for the eight years’ achievement of the grand project, and also the book of academic research that focuses on the survival and development of overseas Chinese in the new era.

Launched in 2011, the Blue Book of Overseas Chinese is a major project of overseas Chinese studies in Huaqiao University. The first volume, released in August that year in Beijing, became the first Blue Book on overseas Chinese in China. So far, it has won three awards as Annual Official Books (e.g. White Paper, Blue Book, Green Book) of the Year, and three more as Annual Official Report of the Year. Since 2014, the Blue Book has been shortlisted every year, as a non-SSAP annual, in the "SSAP Academic Publishing Programme for Innovation Projects". The Blue Book series has become an HQU think tank brand of overseas Chinese studies for its high quality and high standard, exerting significant influence all over the world.

For eight years, the Blue Book has been dedicating itself to overseas Chinese studies, involving their societies, ethnic relations, Chinese language education, media and religion and Chinese merchants as well as the international migration of the Mainland residents and its trends in the globalized world. Also included in the series are their unique contributions to China’s soft power development and the construction of the Belt and Road.
