1. The First Blue Book of 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road Published

In February 2018, the Blue Book of 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road: Research Report on 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (2017) was jointly published by the Maritime Silk Road Research Institute of Huaqiao University (HQU) and the Social Sciences Academic Press. This is the first annual report on Maritime Silk Road research in China.

2. Selected into the "Double First-Class" Initiative of Fujian Province

In March 2018, Huaqiao University was included in the list of the construction plan of world-class universities and world-class disciplines (also named as "Double First-Class" Initiative) of Fujian Province, jointly issued by the Education Department of Fujian Province, Fujian Provincial Department of Finance and Fujian Development and Reform Commission. Meanwhile, 4 of the disciplines in HQU were listed as the construction of peak disciplines and 13 as the construction of plateau disciplines in the Initiative.

3. A Thousand Visits to A Hundred Villages Launched

On April 10^th, 2018, HQU launched A Thousand Visits to A Hundred Villages for students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas. Within 3 to 5 years, about one thousand students will go into one hundred villages in Fujian and provide services to support and benefit the farmers with the goal of poverty alleviation, intellectual development, and ultimately, prosperity of villages. This is the first planned, long-term and large-scale practice and education activity in China for students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas, to serve the rural revitalization strategy.

4. Wang Xinyu Recognized as the Star of Self-Improvement

In May 2018, Wang Xinyu from Huaqiao University was recognized as "the Star of Self-Improvement 2017", an event organized by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the National Association of Students, with only 10 university students all over China being awarded. Wang is the first HQU student to receive the honor.

5. Audit and Assessment of Undergraduate Teaching Performance by the Ministry of Education

From June 4^th to 7^th 2018, Huaqiao University underwent the audit and assessment of undergraduate teaching performance by a panel of experts from the Ministry of Education. They conducted in-depth interviews, made classroom observations and evaluated examination papers in HQU. President of Southwest University, Zhang Weiguo, also leader of the panel, spoke highly of HQU’s achievements.

6. 110^th Anniversary of the Birth of President Liao Chengzhi

September 25^th, 2018 marked the 110^th anniversary of the birth of Huaqiao University President Liao Chengzhi. A seminar, a photo exhibition, a documentary exhibition and a sharing session on Chengzhi Spirit were organized to memorize the first HQU President, who devoted all his life to the establishment and development of the university.

7. First HQU Paper Published in Nature

On October 11^th Beijing Time, the world’s leading science journal Nature published an online research paper entitled "Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 20%", with Professor Wei Zhanhua from the College of Materials Science & Engineering of Huaqiao University being the first corresponding author, PhD student Lin Kebin the first author, and Huaqiao University the first affiliation. This is the first HQU paper ever published in Nature, a breakthrough for the university in fundamental research.

8. HQU to the Champion of 3x3 World University League - 2018 Finals

On November 18^th, 2018, the 3x3 World University League - 2018 Finals ended on Xiamen campus, Huaqiao University. HQU emerged as the champion, becoming the first in China to take the men’s title of the event.

9. Conveying, Studying and Implementing the Spirit of Xi's Speech at Jinan University

On December 13^th, 2018, Huaqiao University held a special meeting to convey, study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech at Jinan University. Guan Yifan, Secretary of the CPC HQU Committee, presided over the meeting. President Xu Xipeng conveyed the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech at Jinan University and documents of the general office of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, and made an arrangement for the study and implementation of the Spirit.

10. Commemorative Activities for the 40^th Anniversary of China's Reform and Opening-up and of HQU’s Reopening

The year 2018 is the 40^th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, as well as that of Huaqiao University's reopening. HQU held a nine-month series of commemorative activities, including convening teachers and students to listen to or watch the live broadcast of the gathering celebrating the 40^th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, discussing the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech delivered at the gathering, and holding a series of lectures on the 40^th anniversary of reform and opening-up, a photo exhibition on HQU's 40^th anniversary of reopening and a series of reports in retrospect of the past 40 years.
