There is an annual extracurricular activity that has been continuously held in HQU for 3 decades, of which the participation has gradually extended from classes, departments, college to university and municipal level, participants including students home and abroad from post-60s to post-00s generation.

This is Sound of Spring, organized by College of Foreign Languages of HQU,which is currently a renowned extracurricular event, involving university teachers and students in Quanzhou, providing both domestic and overseas students with a platform to practice foreign languages and exhibit talents in a diversified way, even becoming an unforgettable memory to students, faculty and alumni ranging from post-60s to post-00s.

Back to 1989, the College of Foreign Languages was just a department. There was only one class for each grade. The Speaking Contest Sound of Spring was just a class activity of English Department for students to practice their oral English.

The success of the first Sound of Spring ignited passion in undergraduate students. With the thoughtful arrangement of the organizer, the consistent support of department leaders and the enthusiastic participation of students, Sound of Spring has developed prosperously even till today. English Speaking Contest, the only one activity in 1989, has been extended to 9 events and 10 competitions with rich contents and diversified forms: Japanese Culture Exhibition, English and Japanese Hosting Competitions, English and Japanese Speaking Contests, English Debate Competition, English and Japanese Sitcom Competitions, English and Japanese Mock Interview Competitions, English and Japanese Dubbing Competitions, etc. From March to May each year, Sound of Spring echoed in HQU as one of the most successful student events.

It is through Sound of Spring that contestants have improved their eloquence, performance and mental qualities, and that organizers have enhanced their management capability and overall ability.

Mao Haoran, Dean of College of Foreign Languages, remarked that over the past three decades, students who had participated in Sound of Spring came to the fore in such competitions as National English Contest for College Students, Japanese Speech Contest - Japanese Culture Week (Shanghai), FLTRP Cup English Public Speaking Contest of China, Japanese Public Speaking Contest for College Students in Fujian, Japanese Composition Competition for Chinese, and the Cross-Straits Interpretation Competition. More than 100 students have won national and provincial awards.

As one of the channels for multicultural exchange, Sound of Spring not only amplifies its brand effect in HQU, but also has a certain impact on some educational and cultural institutions in Japan and other Southeast Asian countries.

Japanese Culture Exhibition is an essential part for Sound of Springwhile performance of China-Ryu Taiko Team of College of Foreign Languages is a routine for the annual opening ceremony and the Culture Exhibition. For more than a decade, China-Ryu Taiko Team has frequently taken part in Sino-Japan friendly exchange activities held in both Fujian Province and Quanzhou City, who has also been invited to perform in Beijing Sino-Japan Folk Festival, and invited by Okinawa Prefecture to attend 2012 Taiko World Cup.

Liu Bin, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee of HQU, noted that the university and the college will further develop more competitive extracurricular activities originated from Sound of Spring, exhibiting academic performance of students, enabling them to learn and apply knowledge, and cultivating their ability of innovation and practice. HQU will keep expanding and innovating sub-events of Sound of Spring based on professional practice, exploring talent training mode of "Foreign Language +" to internationalize students. As a university for overseas Chinese, HQU will integrate its features and resources into every activity of Sound of Spring so as to disseminate and promote Chinese traditional culture extensively.
